Dr Malama manages a cooperative agreement with the Zambian Ministry of Health to establish a national influenza surveillance system, complete with laboratories and a National Influenza Centre that reports regularly to regional laboratories. He is attached to the Ministry of Health as infection surveillance and control technical expert. He also provides technical support to the Ministry of Health in the establishment of the Field Epidemiology training programme and a National Public Health Institute with US government funding.
He was a Public Health specialist, focusing on HIV Prevention. He was also the lead advisor to USAID/Zambia on HIV prevention and provided technical support to four HIV prevention programmes across Zambia. He helped design HIV prevention programmes for funding by USAID.
