Nkosikhona Swaartbooi works as a Coordinator Citizen based Monitoring and a campaigner Ndifuna Ukwazi (NU), an organisation of lawyers and activists that use research and strategic litigation to campaign for justice and equality in poor and working class communities. The organisation works to contribute to building a movement in South Africa by supporting new organisations, mentoring young leaders and teaching activists. NU works closely with the Social Justice Coalition (SJC), a mass-based social movement campaigning for safe, healthy and dignified communities in some of South Africa’s largest, most under-developed and crime affected townships. He is currently serving his second 2 year term as the Chairperson of the Social Justice Coalition and has been serving as the Chairperson of the organisation since 2014. He also serves as a board member for Open Shuhada Street (OSS) Open Shuhada Street (OSS) is a registered non-profit organisation that campaigns for human rights in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. OSS seeks to achieve this by building solidarity campaigns with the Palestinian people employing advocacy, lobbying, and public education and mobilisation. Our campaigns serve to shed light on the abuses of Palestinian human rights particularly those in the occupied West Bank. SJC operates extensively throughout Khayelitsha, where Nkosikhona’s campaign work and activism is centred.
