This public seminar welcomes Prof Gesche Joost from the Design Research Lab in Berlin, who is currently a visiting senior scholar at Research ICT Africa. Prof Joost has conducted extensive interdisciplinary research on civic design, which focuses on questions regarding urban communities and social practices, participation and engagement as well as sustainability. She will share findings from projects like MAZI, a DIY peer-to-peer network that offers alternative access to the Internet, as well as other design experiments and interventions for an inclusive digital society.

Adjunct Prof Alison Gillwald from the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, and Executive Director of Research ICT Africa, will in turn discuss the practical challenges involved with designing sustainable development practices in evolving digital contexts.
